Cessna Citation Ultra

The Cessna Citation Ultra is one of Cessna’s premier examples of a simple yet economical business jet. With unparalleled cabin dimensions, speed, and takeoff performance, it boasts the fastest straight-wing design in the Citation series.

Its spacious eight-person cabin is one of the longest in any small jet. It stretches over 17 feet long and has 26 cubic feet of baggage space.

Its History

Cessna developed the Cessna Citation V (Model 560) with Citation II as their inspiration. The manufacturer first flew this jet in August 1987. After this, the aviation authorities certified it on December 9, 1988. Ultimately, the company began deliveries in April 1987, selling 774 units by 2011.

Moreover, Cessna announced the upgraded Cessna Citation Ultra jet in September 1993, with FAA certification granted in June 1994. By then, it boasts more powerful 13.6 kN (3045 lb) JT15D5D engines and Honeywell Primus 1000 EFIS avionics, with 279 deliveries.

In 1994, the Ultra earned Flying magazine’s “Best Business Jet” title and was manufactured until 1999. Both the Citation V and Ultra have a fuel capacity of 5814 pounds.

The cabin cross-section of the Citation V is 5 feet wide and 5 feet high, inherited from the Citation II. However, its length was extended by 20 inches to 17 feet, accommodating up to 8 passengers.

In September 1993, Cessna announced plans to upgrade and modernize the Citation V with better Cessna Citation Ultra specs. Subsequently, the aircraft underwent another upgrade to become the Citation V Ultra, featuring advanced avionics and engines.

How It Evolved

The Citation Ultra evolved from the Citation V, boasting larger Pratt & Whitney turbofan engines. These JT15D-5D engines deliver 3,045 pounds of thrust each. As such, the Ultra can climb at a remarkable initial rate of 4,100 feet per minute from sea level.

This jet has a maximum cruising altitude of about 45,000 feet. Furthermore, it comes with the reliable and user-friendly Honeywell Primus 1000 EFIS, featuring three CRT displays.

The Ultra is renowned for its ease of operation, cost-effectiveness, low maintenance, and exceptional safety and reliability.

The Cessna Citation Ultra jet’s versatility allows it to operate from short runways at high altitudes and temperatures. It’s all thanks to its straight-wing design, albeit sacrificing some top-end speed, reaching 495 miles per hour.

Furthermore, the straight-wing design of the Citation Ultra enables it to operate at very low approach speeds, enhancing safety and landing performance. Also, it has a range of over 2,255 miles and a 45-minute fuel reserve. Hence, it ensures safe and comfortable transportation, even in challenging weather conditions.

This range covers routes from Palm Springs, CA, to Chicago, IL, with ample fuel for diversion to alternate airports. Additionally, the Cessna Citation Ultra‘s range extends well into Canada and Mexico, making it a versatile choice for various destinations.

This jet has an optimal balance of hourly cost, capability, range, speed, takeoff, climb, landing performance, and comfort. Unsurprisingly, the Citation Ultra and the Citation 560 series are among the most popular business aircraft ever built.

The Cabin Space

Cessna achieves its goal of crafting simple, cost-effective business jets with the Citation Ultra, boasting unparalleled cabin space, speed, and takeoff capabilities. Furthermore, its seventeen-foot-five-inch cabin is the longest among light private jets, with room for eight passengers.

Thoughtful Cessna Citation Ultra interior design elements like seamless wall panels, indirect lighting, and mirrors enhance the sense of spaciousness. Passengers can enjoy individual flat-panel entertainment systems and optional audio jacks.

Additionally, the Ultra offers ample storage space. As such, it can accommodate up to twenty-six cubic feet of baggage, ensuring travelers can bring all they need for the journey.

Avionic System

In avionics, simplicity reigns supreme. The jet’s suite engineers understood this, streamlining displays and controls for straightforward interpretation. The Ultra reduced clutter from five screens and eight analog controls to four sleek screens with integrated controls. Hence, it has better pilot coordination and flight performance.
